Best Practice For Optimizing The Title Tag

You know what the best part of this is writing an attractive and effective title isn’t that much hard. If you know what works and what doesn’t.

Here are the seven important aspects to consider when optimizing your title tags for search.

Title Tag Length

50-60 characters is the ideal length of the Title Tag. You must make sure your reader and Crawlers should be able to see the title properly to get a better idea of why to click on your link.

There is no such guide that tells you – this is the exact character limit, it varies because of character width (it’s actually based on pixels (600 pixels), so the best rule of thumb is to use the ideal characters suggested above ).

You can preview your title length with this Free SERP Preview Tool:-

Most of the search engine start cutting down the title tag and add and ellipsis(“…”).

Always practice avoiding those ellipsis dots on the end of the title. Stay away from all capital letters in the title because it makes harder to read for the user and also limit the number of character in the tag.

Remember, Even if you optimize the title tag, search engine may make a change in the title that what you have provided to display in the SERPs

When I make a small tweak with one of my blog title by placing the focus keyword at the start of the title gives me the best result (7% increase the CTR).

Remember search engine like google can easily recognize stuffed keyword. So google does not encourage webmaster to stuff their title with lots of keywords. It creates a bad user experience in front of the reader and search engine.

Also, don’t try to stuff the keyword which are closely related or variations of the same key phrase multiple time in the tag because this will negatively impact your ranking.

So use the keyword in title tag accordingly.

Don’t Over Optimize

Always pay attention to the user and focus on writing titles that are genuinely helpful for the reader. Avoid repetitive and spammy looking titles. Make it simple.

Avoid just stuffing the keyword and repeat a variation of the same term over and over. If you use too many keywords then the search engine it will definitely rewrite the title for you.

We will never quit rewriting titles. We’ve seen so many sites whose title really suck. A lot of sites have no title; a lot of sites have a title saying “Top Page”. In fact, Google almost always rewrites titles. We couldn’t provide useful results to our users if we quit rewriting titles. Experiments showed us users preferred written titles. So, we’ll continue to write titles.

The best practice is to mention your brand name at the end of the title. Only in some cases, your brand name comes first (.eg home page).

If you are a well-established brand users most likely click on your link because they consider you as a reliable and trustworthy source for that term.

Be cautious – Where, When and How you are using your brand name.

Use dash (|) or colon (:) or hyphen (-) to separate your brand name from the actual title of the page.

Attractive and Original Title

The first interaction for lot of people to your website is through your title tag in the SERP’s. Make sure it accurate, clear to understand and stand out.

The best practice is to make sure your title tag is unique. Using authentic and unique titles for every webpage, makes search engines understand that your content is unique and valuable, and helps you drive higher CTR (click-through rates). Authenticity and Uniqueness are a crucial part of your title tag optimization.

Avoid the default title or random title – the search engine gets confused and thinks of it as duplicate content. A duplicate title is not helpful for readers as well as for the search engines.

SEMrush

You can use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to find where you have issues in your title tag and run your own tests through any SEO tool I personally like Semrush on-page auditors and Crawling Tools.

If you are working on a super time-sensitive website like News or Magzine or product review.

Then adding date or year or month can increase the CTR of the website.

If you are not in this kind of niches you don’t need to worry about adding a date to your tags.

Holistic search optimization is much more important.

CALL TO ACTION(CTA)

If you give the clear CTA, this action tell user to act for what they are looking for.

CTA provide some extra by giving them the reason why to click on that blue link.

Use can use word like amazing, buy, download, easy, free, learn, find, listen, watch online, cheap, affordable, etc.
